1. Let’s talk about meat. This week the World Health Organization came out with a report stating that red meat and processed meats may increase the risk of cancer. Red meat includes beef, pork, lamb, and goat. These along with other animal meats should be varied to provide enough protein in our diet. Processed meats include hot dogs, ham, bacon, sausage, and beef jerky. In general, processed meats are high in fat and sodium and therefore should be limited in a healthy diet. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has responded to WHO’s report in this statement.
2. Lifestyle changes are made in small steps. If you’re going to make any changes soon consider trying one of these. A healthy lifestyle is more important than any extreme or fad diet. My favorite changes mentioned are “eat plants” and “move more.” Plant-based foods are naturally low in calories and fat and high in vitamins and minerals. Think about eating the rainbow and adding plant foods to each meal. Move more is an easy one! Take a walk at lunch or after work, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and find a workout you enjoy doing regularly. Start small when making changes to your lifestyle.
3. Halloween is tomorrow meaning October is over! If you’re staying in this weekend check out this fun Halloween candy wine pairing chart. Don’t forget all the candy will go on sale November 1st so grab a friend and a bottle of wine. Drink responsibly and try not to overindulge too much!
